Everything about Fai First Division totally explained
The FAI eircom League of Ireland First Division is the second tier of the Republic of Ireland's new FAI League of Ireland created following the merging of the FAI and the League of Ireland. The successor of the League of Ireland First Division, it's part of the FAI League of Ireland, just below the FAI Premier Division.
All clubs participating in the old league were invited to apply for inclusion in the new Premier Division with the top twelve, as selected by an Independent Assessment Group, being handed a spot in the Premier Division. All the remaining ten clubs were to be placed in the First Division.
However on 19 February 2007, the FAI revoked the Premier Division licence that had been granted to Shelbourne which saw them drop into the First Division and Waterford United replaced them in the Premier Division.
